Prof Dr Rik Schots

Rik Schots is Head of the Department of Haematology at the Universitair Ziekenhuis (UZ) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium. He is also Director of the haematopoietic stem cell transplantation programme in the UZ Brussel. He obtained his medical doctorate at the VUB in 1983 and became an internal medicine haematologist in 1988. In 2004 he obtained his PhD and became Head of Division of Haematology and Associate Professor at the VUB. In 2012, he became Head of Department of Haematology at the UZ Brussels.

Professor Schots’ main research interests are multiple myeloma (clinical, translational and biological) and stem cell transplantation. He has been the principal and clinical investigator of numerous clinical trials in the field of various haematological malignancies (leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma). He is past Vice-President (2010-2013) and President of the Belgian Hematology Society (2013–2016). Currently, he is President of BeQuinT, member of the College of Oncology and a member of BSH, ASH and EHA. Furthermore, he is an editorial board member for the Belgian Journal of Hematology and Oncotarget and therapy. He has published widely in several peer-reviewed journals, with over 80 research papers in publication.
